STEM+ Families

National PTA STEM+ Families

MCE PTA is excited for our first STEM Night! With the help of a STEM+ Families Grant from National PTA, we will host a STEM Night and 5th Grade Science Fair on Thursday, March 28, 2024.

Q: What is STEM Night?

A: STEM Night is a family event to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

Families will work together to complete engineering activities and challenges.

The activity stations are:

  • Cookie Bridge (using cookies, build a bridge that will hold 1 cup of milk)
  • Sam's Submarine Knowledge (can you build a submarine to keep Sam the gummy worm dry?)
  • Sam's Parachute Misadventure  (Sam the gummy worm got stuck at the top of a mountain. Can you build him a parachute to get down safely?)
  • Sam's Raft Rescue (Sam the gummy worm lost his life jacket and is stuck on a raft. Can you build something to help him retrieve his life jacket?)
  • Earthquake Shake Table (Can you build a structure that will survive an earthquake?)
  • Straw Rockets (See how far and high you can shoot these straw rockets!)

Q: What is the 5th Grade Science Fair?

A:  This is MCE's first time doing a Science Fair in a long while and we have had requests to hold a Science Fair for the students.  MCE PTA and MCE decided for our first science fair we would be for those 5th graders who wanted to participate. 5th grade is the first year students in Washington State take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).

MCE PTA provides the trifold poster boards for the students, and MCE's STEM Teacher Mr. Harvey provided books and resources in class.  If any student needs additional materials to complete their project, they were asked to reach out to gro.a1721711746tpecm1721711746@tned1721711746iserp1721711746.

The STEM+ Families Program is part of PTA's efforts to foster passion for science, technology, engineering, and math through fun activities and by involving families in these experiences together. Our STEM initiative will engage students, families, and communities in opportunities to explore... inspire... empower... and educate... STEM possibilities.
