“When children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read, or when the images they see are distorted, negative, or laughable, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part.”
–Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop

March 2022 - Women's History Month Wish List HERE
This month we celebrate Women’s History Month and highlight books that focus on the contributions women have made in U.S. and world history. We also include books that boast strong female characters. The tradition started with Women’s History Day in 1978 in California and originally corresponded with International Women’s Day, which is celebrated annually on March 8 in other countries. In 1980, US President Jimmy Carter officially declared the week of March 8 the start of National Women’s History Week in the United States. It was expanded to a month-long observance in 1987.
Every year the National Women’s History Alliance chooses a theme to celebrate women’s history, and the 2022 Women’s History theme is “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” It is both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during the pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.
